Steuben County (Indiana)

Steuben County is a county located in the state of Indiana in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Angola.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme northeast of Indianapolis, on the east by Ohio, on the north by Michigan and has an area of 835 square kilometers, of which 36 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: DeKalb County, Noble County and LaGrange County.

History

Steuben County was formed on February 7, 1835 from parts of LaGrange County. It was named after Friedrich Wilhelm August Steuben, born in Magdeburg, a German - American general who reorganized the army of George Washington in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000, lived in Steuben County 33 214 people in 12,738 households and 8,916 families. The population density was 42 people per square kilometer. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.

25.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 10.4 percent between 18 to 24, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years. 23.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 102 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over 101.2 males.

The median income for a household was $ 44,089, and the median income for a family $ 50,567. Males have a median income of $ 35,300, women $ 23,856. The per capita income was $ 20,647. 4.9 percent of families and 6.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
