Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac

Stevan Stojanović Mokranjac ( Serbian Cyrillic Стеван Стојановић Мокрањац; born December 28 1855jul / January 9 1856greg Negotin, .. † September 28, 1914 in Skopje ) is one of the most famous Serbian composer and music teacher of the 19th century. His work was essential to bring the spirit of Serbian folklore in classical music.

His life was greatly influenced by spiritual songs and folk songs, and both genres were his inspiration for his work. His most famous pieces are Rukoveti, a collection of songs, which is based on folk motifs from Bosnia, Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria.

Several pieces are composed for liturgical use, such as the setting of the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom (1894-1895) with the Cherubinic hymn as the most famous part.
