Steve Davis (Bassist)

Steve Davis ( born 1929 in Philadelphia, † August 21, 1987 ) was an American jazz bassist who was active primarily in the 1960s. He was also known by his Muslim name Syeed Luquman Abdul.

Life

Davis was active since 1947 as a bass player around Philadelphia with the bands of Joe Sewell, Charles Coker and Calvin Todd. Then he came into New York City to Lester Young and Sonny Stitt. In 1955 he was arrested on the same weekend as Jimmy Heath with possession of heroin. Four years later he was back on the scene. He was married to singer Khadijah ( the sister in law of McCoy Tyner ) and was a friend of Coltrane. In the summer of 1960 he was one of several months to a quartet of John Coltrane, with whom he performed several weeks at New York's Jazz Gallery and in Philadelphia, and was involved in October 1961, among others, on the recording of the album My Favorite Things.

He was also involved in recording of Chuck Mangione (hey baby!), McCoy Tyner Nights of Ballads & Blues, Eddie Jefferson and James Moody. With Moody, he worked from 1961 until 1962.
