Steve Katz (musician)

Steve Katz ( born May 9, 1945 in Brooklyn, New York City ) is an American guitarist and singer who was best known as a member of the bands Blues Project and Blood, Sweat & Tears.

Born in New York, Katz in Schenectady, New York grew up. From a young age he became a talented musician in appearance. The late 1950s he played in a local television show called Teenage Barn current hits.

But he soon became interested in more on the roots of popular music, folk and blues. In New York's Greenwich Village, he found plenty of like-minded people, including Stefan Grossman, Maria Muldaur and John Sebastian, with whom he played in the Even Dozen Jug Band in 1963.

Katz broke off his college education and worked as a guitar teacher. He also played in different groups. Danny Kalb eventually hired him in 1964 for his new band, which should be known as the Blues Project. The Blues Project Katz 1967 played at the Monterey Pop Festival. Shortly afterwards, the group split up.

Al Kooper won Katz in 1968 as a member of Blood, Sweat & Tears, in which he played until 1972, the guitar. Then Katz worked mainly as a producer and manager, among other things, Lou Reed and the Irish folk band Horslips. Ireland was his second home.

Later, Steve Katz pulled back more and more from the music business and lived in seclusion in the hinterland of the State of New York.
