Steve Reid

Steve Reid ( born January 29, 1944 in New York City; † April 13, 2010 ) was an American drummer.

Biographical

1965 Reid took his degree (BA degree) at Adelphi University, Garden City / New York. He was the first jazz musician ( chaired by Nancy Hanks ) received the first scholarship of the " National Endowment for the Arts ." After that, he was a member of Broadcast Music Inc. ( BMI), American Federation of Musicians Local 802 of the AFL -CIO ( 1965 ), Black Music Association, and Jazz Foundation. He lived in Europe, first in Munich, the last years in Lugano / Switzerland.

First recordings done in 1961 with Martha & the Vandellas ( "Heat Wave" / Motown Records) in the Apollo Theatre House band with Quincy Jones. Since then followed over 30 recordings as a leader or sideman, including with Fela Kuti, James Brown, for example ( "popcorn" ), Sun Ra (Sun Ra's The Science Myth Solar Arkestra ) and Miles Davis.

By 1969, Reid lived for three years in Africa, where he commissioned several governments (eg from Nigeria, Liberia, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Morocco and Egypt) gave concerts among others. Since the 1970s he had his own record label, Mustevic Records, for which he recorded albums like " Nova " and " Rhythmatism ".

As of 2000, followed by numerous recordings with the likes of the jazz scene in Europe, including " Waves ", " Groups " and " Spirit Walk " (2005 with Chuck Henderson and ensemble) for Soul Jazz Records ( London) to his trio with Boris Netsvetaev (St. Petersburg / Hamburg) and Chris Lachotta ( Munich) and " Live In Europe " ( 2002, Lena Bloch, tenor saxophone, instead Henderson ) and "A Drum Story" (Solo 2003). Reid had regular appearances on the mainland (especially in Germany and the Benelux countries ) and in London (Tour in November 2005), in April 2006, again a tour across the United States (New York, Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles ).

Style

Reid's game is heavily influenced by African rhythms and modal harmonies of John Coltrane. Maybe his style is most aptly described by the title of one of his LPs in the 1970s (now re-released on Soul Jazz Records ): " Rhythmatism "!
