He has published pieces under the stage name Steve " Silk" Hurley and had, together with the singer Keith Nunnally many hits in the American Dance / Club charts as JM Silk (short for Jack Master Silk ), including I Can not Turn Around, the 1986 reached # 1.

From 1987 he published solo as Steve " Silk" Hurley and had with Jack Your Body a worldwide hit, the two weeks number one ranked in the UK singles chart, despite Hurley's refusal to advertise it. This was the first House - piece which has topped the charts in the UK, and it paved the way for the acid house sound that was popular during the late 1980s there. In addition, the piece broke the chart rules, since the maxi-single topped the hitherto valid time limit of 25 minutes. In Europe, it remained his only solo hit in the United States was followed by more solo releases, such as the number -three dance hit Work It Out in 1989.

Hurley also worked as a prominent remixer and mixed pieces eg Madonna ( Take a Bow ), Jennifer Lopez ( Is not It Funny ) Brandy ( What About Us), Prince (Get Off) or Black Box (fantasy, I Do not Know Anybody Else ) from new.

Beginning of 1998 had Hurley with singer Sharon Pass as Steve " Silk" Hurley & The Voices of Life again a smaller chart hit with the song The Word Is Love.

Hurley was nominated in 1998 and 1999 for the Grammy for Best Remixer of the year.
