Steve Slagle

Steve Slagle ( born September 18, 1951 in Los Angeles ) is an American jazz saxophonist.

Slagle attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he played with fellow students such as John Scofield, Harvie Swartz, Joey Baron, and Joe Lovano and collaborated with the band by Stevie Wonder. In 1977 he went to New York, where he worked with Machito and the Afro - Cuban Orchestra and has performed with Lionel Hampton, Woody Herman and Cab Calloway.

His first recordings he played one with the Steve Kuhn Quartet, with whom he undertook a tour of Europe. After appearances with organist "Brother" Jack McDuff 1981, he was a member of Carla Bley band, besides he also appeared with Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra.

After shooting with Milton Nascimento in Rio de Janeiro, he was the musical director of Ray Barretto's band and then arranger and saxophonist of the Mingus Big Band, with whom he recorded two Grammy-nominated albums. After that, he was a member of various bands of Joe Lovano. The resulting album here 52nd Street Themes ( Blue Note Records) was awarded a Grammy.

Since 1983 Slagle published a number of albums as a bandleader. He teaches at the Manhattan School of Music and runs his own label Slagle Records.
