Steven Croft (bishop)

Steven John Lindsey Croft ( * May 29, 1957 in Halifax, West Yorkshire ) is a British clergyman of the Church of England and in 2009 Bishop of Sheffield.

Training

Steve Croft studied until 1980 Classical Studies and Theology at Worcester College, Oxford and at Cranmer Hall Anglican Theological College, University of Durham. In 1984 he received his doctorate with a dissertation on The identity of the Individual in the Psalms (Eng. = The identity of the individual in the Psalms ).

Priesthood

Croft was in 1983 ordained a deacon in the Diocese of London, consecrated in the following year as a priest. From 1983 to 1987 he was a curate in the parish of St. Andrew in Enfield and then Vicar of Ovenden, a parish in the Diocese of Wakefield, where he worked from 1987 to 1996. From 1997 to 2000, Steven Croft member of the Church of England Evangelical Council and from 1996 to 2004 Head of Cranmer Hall.

2004 Croft was commissioned by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York to participate in the construction of Fresh expressions. The aim of the initiative is that Christians make of all faiths think about new forms of expression ( fresh expressions ) of the church in their area. These new expressions are defined as " a form of church for our changing culture, specially designed for people who are not a member of any church before." In recognition of his work he was awarded by the Archbishop of Canterbury with the Cross of St Augustine.

In July 2008, Steven Croft was proposed as successor to Jack Nicholls in the office of Bishop of Sheffield. In the following November he was elected by the chapter of the cathedral of Sheffield and Sheffield Cathedral consecrated in the 9 May 2009 for the seventh Bishop of Sheffield. After taking office, he celebrated three services at various locations in the diocese, so that as many people were given the opportunity to meet the new bishop.

2012, Croft by Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was sent as a representative of the Anglican Church, without voting rights, at the 13th Synod of Bishops of the Roman Catholic Church in Rome.

Membership in the House of Lords

Croft heard since July 15, 2013 as a clergyman Lord the House of Lords officially. On October 14, 2013, was introduced with the assistance of Timothy John Stevens, Bishop of Leicester, and Stephen plates, the Bishop of Wakefield, officially the House of Lords and put in the induction ceremony the oath of office.
