Steven R. White

Steven R. White ( born December 26, 1959 in Lawton (Oklahoma) ) is an American physicist known for his development of the density matrix renormalization group.

Life and work

White graduated from the University of California, San Diego, mathematics, physics and economics (Bachelor in 1982, summa cum laude) and received his doctorate from Cornell University with John Wilkins and Kenneth Wilson (New Methods for electronic structure calculations ). After that, he was as a postdoc at the University of California at Santa Barbara, and from 1989 at the University of California, Irvine, where he was an associate professor in 1993 and professor since 1997.

White led 1992, the density matrix renormalization group ( DMRG ) that numerical variation method of high accuracy for solving particular one - and two-dimensional strongly correlated quantum mechanical Vielteilchenprobleme proved and revolutionized this field. For example, it examined thus high-temperature superconductor in Hubbard model and, the formation of streaks in the electron distribution point. Before that, he already dealt with other numerical methods in many-body quantum mechanics, eg with quantum Monte Carlo method for the investigation of strongly correlated electron systems such as high temperature superconductors (which he later also studied with the DMRG ) and as a student in San Diego with quantum chemical calculations with numerical Kent Wilson.

1982 to 1985 he was a National Science Foundation Fellow and 1988/9 IBM Postdoctoral Fellow. In 2003 he received the Aneesur -Rahman Prize of the American Physical Society (APS ) for his work. He is a Councillor of the Division of Computational Physics of the APS.
