Steyl

Steyl (sometimes also written Steijl ) is a village of 4,189 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2005) in the Netherlands. The place is now a suburb of the city of Venlo.

Kloosterdorp Steyl

In Steyl is the mother house of the SVD (Societas Divini Verbi, SVD, Society of the Divine Word ). This Catholic religious order founded by Arnold Janssen in the 19th century.

In addition to the male missionary order of the Divine Word Missionaries to the foundations of Arnold Janssen also include the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters and the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of Perpetual Adoration. The latter have become quite the contemplative life dedicated ( pink sisters, according to the color of their habits ). These three monasteries of the Divine Word religious family form the so called Kloosterdorp Steyl.

Mission Museum

A special treasure is the Mission Museum Steyl. Receive full old-style, here an atmosphere will learn how they must have been the days of the establishment of the museum at the beginning of the last century. Since 1931, the museum remained unchanged. Missionaries brought at the time the objects from around the world to Steyl together. The purpose of the museum was to allow visitors to time information and insights of distant lands and cultures. An impressive Wunderkammer with many curiosities remained here obtained for the present.

Double Church

Also worth mentioning is that the monastery belongs, two storey semi Church. The upper church is accessible only through the mission home: a light-filled space in which the original neo-Gothic interior remains almost intact. It is often used in the summer months for corporate parties and events. The lower church of the Mission House St. Michael, a contemplative place of silence, the SVD community serves as a prayer room. The artist Will Horsten from Kevelaer gave her in 1972 their new, distinctive character. He has managed to enrich an old church with modern elements. Here is also the grave of St. Arnold Janssen high. In the upper church of the mission house is a valuable historic pipe organ ( Späth / Klais from 1888/1937 ). On the German romantic instrument international organ concerts are played in the summer months.

Park of St. Michael

The facilities of the park of St. Michael are from the early days of the mission house. These include several caves that were created in the early 20th century. The park is along with the " Jochumhof " part of the Garden Route Limburg of the European Garden Heritage Network - EGHN.

Guest house

The Divine Word Missionaries conduct in St. Michael today into a friendly guest house ( Centrum St. Michael ). Here are for different sized groups ( 10-80 people) several multifunctional meeting rooms, prayer and meditation rooms, common areas and a large dining room. More accommodation in different categories and three large rooms (up to 150 people ) are offered in the mission house. Overall, the center of St. Michael has around 55 beds for guests.

Sequoiahof

In Maas ferry and monastery near there is a settlement called Sequoiahof. Here is a large and impressive sequoia.

Nearby points Steyl near the monastery of St. Michael the Botanical Garden " Jochumhof ", the " Schutterijmuseum " ( Museum of shooting clubs ) Steyl and the " Pottenbakkerij " (pottery ). The population Steyls is characterized by an active club life. Well known is also the Divine Word Carnival.
