Stig Sjölin

Stig Sjölin ( born December 21, 1928 in Värnamo; † January 9, 1995 in Helsingborg) was a Swedish boxer. Sjölin was European champion in 1951, silver medalist at the European Championships in 1949 and 1953, bronze medalist at the European Championships in 1953 and the Olympics in 1952.

Career

Sjölin was next Olle Tandberg the successful Swedish boxer of all time. He played 295 fights, of which he won 263, and was a seven-time Swedish champion in the years 1949, 1951-54, 1956 and 1957.

In 1949 Sjölin ersrmals in the European championships and won the silver medal at first, taking in the final of the Olympic champion of 1948, the Hungarian László Papp defeated. At the European Championships two years later he was with a final victory over the West German Günter Sladky European champion at middleweight ( - 75kg). As European champions Sjölin was automatically qualified for the 1952 Olympic Games, in which he reached after beating the Finns Börje Grönroos ( 3-0) and the Australian Anthony Madigan (3-0) the semi-finals, which he, however, against the Americans Floyd Patterson (DQ 3 ) lost and thus won the Olympic bronze medal.

After this success Sjölin also took part in the European Championships in 1953, failed this time, however, already in the semifinals of the West Berlin Dieter Wemhöner (2:1). After winning the Nordic Championships 1955, he won in the same year, the silver medal at the European Championships in 1955. His opponent in the final was the Soviet athletes Gennadi Schatkow. The following year, Sjölin participated once again in the Olympic Games, but did not this time beyond the first fight, which he lost to Argentina's Víctor Zalazar.

1957 won Sjölin again the Nordic Championships and then retired from active sports.
