Stilfs

Stelvio (Italian: Stelvio) is a municipality in South Tyrol (Italy ) with 1184 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) and belongs to the district community Vinschgau. The municipality consists of the fractions village Stelvio, Stelvio yards, Gomagoi, Trafoi, Stelvio bridge, Except Solda Solda and Stelvio.

The toponym is detected as Stilvis 1090 and 1290 as Stilfes and may have a pre-Roman origin.

The municipality comprises the Suldental and Trafoi, two side valleys of the Val Venosta.

There are a remarkable density of some of the highest mountains of the eastern Alps, the Ortler in particular, with 3905 m slm the highest peak in South Tyrol and Trentino-Alto Adige region simultaneously. In the south of Stelvio Trafoi lies in the valley the Stelvio Pass ( 2758 m ), which is developed by the famous panorama road SS 38.

The municipality of Stelvio is one of four ski resorts (two in Solda, one in Trafoi and in the summer at the Stelvio ).

In Solda, there is the Museum Ortles, which is a part of Reinhold Messner Mountain Museum.

In the fraction Trafoi Gustav Thöni was born, the most successful Italian skiers in the history of this sport.
