Still video camera

A still video camera is a type of electronic cameras that make motionless images and save them as individual images in a video format as PAL or NTSC on a rotating magnetic disk. To playback the images, the magnetic disk is rotated at the frame rate of the video system used, whereby the image read again and again and as a video stream is generated, which can be played back on a conventional TV. The images get stored and presented in analogue and the resolution is limited to the video system used.

Popular these cameras were in the late 1980's. They can be viewed as a predecessor of digital cameras. Among the best known models include Sony Mavica, Canon's Ion and Xapshot cameras.
