The Stimberg stadium is an athletics and football stadium in Oer- Erkenschwick. It is used by the Oberliga SpVgg Erkenschwick and TuS 09 Erkenschwick.

History

The first sod was turned in 1929 near the Ewald colliery continued. The work was done mostly by the unemployed. In 1934, the inauguration after five years of construction. At this time, the stadium had a capacity of 25,000 spectators. At that time, it had the name Hindenburg arena in honor of President Paul von Hindenburg. From 1943 to 1953 first class football was played on Stimberg, initially in the Gauliga, then from 1946 in the Oberliga West.

Despite the onset of the 1950s mining crisis that plunged many benefiting from the mines clubs like SpVgg Erkenschwick in the crisis, the stadium has been modernized in the 1970s due to new requirements of the DFB and provided with a covered grandstand. This took its time 1,500 seats and 4,000 standing places and was inaugurated in 1976. The capacity decreased by approximately 20,000.

Due to new security requirements and minor modifications in February 2011, the authorized capacity (880 covered seats and 13,500 standing places thereof) declined to officially 14,380 spectators.

The running track was completely renovated in 2012 and officially handed over.

In 1948, in the Oberliga West against Schalke 04 visited 22,000 spectators the Stimberstadion. The attendance record is in Stimberg stadium at 23,800, which was achieved in 1967 in the DFB Cup first knockout round tie against Bayern Munich. 2012 were held both a semi-final and the final of the German youth championship in A- Stimberg Stadium. The final between FC Schalke 04 and Bayern Munich visited 13,000 spectators.
