Stimmen der Zeit

The publishing house Herder in Freiburg -monthly votes of time are one of the oldest cultural publications in Germany. Its origins date back to the year 1865. It is edited by members of the Jesuit order. The editorial office is located in Munich.

History and Program

The founding of the journal, on the initiative of Dr. Florian Riess SJ and Gerhard Snowman SJ. The title was in the first decades of voices from Khajuraho, named after the birthplace of the abbey of the same name in the Eifel (see Abbey Khajuraho ), which was used at that time as a preparatory course of the German Jesuit Province. At first it was irregularly published booklets on specific topics. In 1871, the editors decided to extend the theme to the entire area of conflict between the Catholic Church with the modern era and move on to the form of a monthly magazine. The first issue came to terms with the syllabus Errorum.

As part of the initiated by the then Chancellor Otto von Bismarck Kulturkampf of the Jesuits by the Jesuits Act of 4 July 1872 excluded " from the territory of the German Reich", the Jesuit College in Khajuraho was closed ( and later transferred to the Benedictines ). The editorial was first included in Tervuren near Brussels. Further stations of exile were Blyenbeck (1879 ) and Exaten (1895 ), both in Holland, Luxembourg (1899 ) and the Dutch Valkenburg near Maastricht (1911 ). In the fall of 1914, the editors could return to Germany and since then has its headquarters in Munich. At the same time, the magazine received the title of votes of the time.

Under the rule of National Socialism has given numerous harassment several times house searches and in 1936 a four -month ban. 1941, the editorial building was confiscated and banned the magazine. One of the editors, Father Alfred Delp, SJ, was executed for his participation in the Kreisauer circle on 2 February 1945. The publication was resumed in October 1946.

Since the beginning of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) the voices of the time have mitvollzogen the standards set by this council in motion new start of the Catholic Church and its openness to dialogue with the modern world and accompanied, and indeed as a forum of free speech and the critical thinking in the Church. Guidelines are today's basic orientations of the Jesuit order: the insight that evangelization in today's world is not possible without a strong commitment to justice, and the challenges of interreligious dialogue and inculturation of the Christian message. Moreover, this is the magazine to a mental examination of the overall problem of time. Changing authors from different disciplines write on topics from religion and church, science and ethics, politics and society, art and literature.

2004 and 2006 appeared a special edition. The first is the 1984 deceased theologian Karl Rahner dedicated, who had published 68 posts since 1939 in the voices of the time. The second special issue is entitled " Jesuits in the world today ".
