Stokes' law
The Stokes equation, which is based on the Stokes' law is used to calculate the sedimentation velocity of spherical body in a liquid. For non- spherical bodies is used as a rough approximation rather than the particle radius also halved its equivalent diameter.
The recognition follows with
The (stationary ) rate of descent
The individual symbols stand for the following sizes:
- - sedimentation
- - Volume of the particle
- - acceleration due to gravity
- - Radius of the falling object
- - Density of the particle
- - Density of the fluid
- - Dynamic viscosity of the fluid
Stokes equation is valid for less than one slow sedimentation in Reynolds number. This is the case when the inertia of the fluid is negligible for the caused by the falling body flow. At higher Reynolds number, the formation of vortices must be considered.
