Stolpen

Stolpen is a small town in Saxony. The city is located about 25 kilometers east of Dresden and belongs to the district Saxon Switzerland & Eastern Ore Mountains. Landmark and tourist attraction of Stolpen is perched on a basalt rock ruins of the castle Stolpen.

The municipality is divided into the main town Stolpen as well as in the other districts Heeselicht, Helmsdorf, Langenwolmsdorf, Lauterbach and Renner -Neudörfel.

History

The Stolpen castle was first mentioned in records in 1222. The fort was in the possession of the Bishops of Meissen. Beginning of the 15th century did the north upstream castle settlement. After the Meissen bishops had moved their residence from Meissen Castle Stolpen in the 15th century, the town developed to the city and became the center of the most important Meissen pin territory. 1813 Napoleon Bonaparte had defenses built around the fortress, the castle destroyed but mostly when he withdrew.

Name

The name Stolpen based on the Old Slavic word tumbled, which refers to the importance of post or wall on the appearance of basalt columns. The coat of arms shows in front of golden background a blue castle with gate and two towers. Above the gate of the red-clad torso of a bishop is shown. The crest thus refers to the city government by the Meissen bishops.

Stolpen is connected by state highways with Dresden and Bautzen on access to the national road 6, Radeberg, Pirna with access to the A 17, Neustadt in Sachsen and Bischofswerda with access to the A 4.
