Stony Plain Records

Stony Plain Records is an independent Canadian record label that specializes in traditional music such as country, folk and blues. It was founded in 1979 by Holger Peterson and is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta.

History

The founder of the label, Holger Petersen, was a student and had a Blue radio show on CKUA, a radio station in Alberta. Thus he learned many blues musicians know that occurred in the city and interviewed them often. The first plate which he published, was a recording with Walter Horton. Were released the recordings on London Records, and after a short time and Roosevelt Sykes and Johnny Shines shots for him, matured the plan to start their own label. However, the first record was released on the new label was not a blues album, but a folk recording of his friend Paul Hann, the Petersen also made known to other genres. But it took until the mid - 1980s to Stony Plain stood on a sound financial basis.

1993 met Petersen and guitarist Duke Robillard, a friendship that not only led to 20 albums, which started the guitarist for the label, but Robillard also produced albums, so with Jimmy Witherspoon, Jay McShann, Rosco Gordon and Billy Boy Arnold. Besides own recordings sells Stony Plain Records in Canada, many European and American labels, such as Blind Pig Records.

Besides his work as a record producer he is still working as a radio presenter for CKUA, he designed for this station for 30 years, a weekly Blue shipment, and for CBC Radio, where he hosts every week on Saturday Night Blues. He also actively involved in organizations in the music industry. He plays an active role in SOCAN, the Canadian GEMA and the Canadian Independent Record Production Association. He was also a founder of the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, of which he was for three years.

The label has released over 330 albums from the field of blues, R & B, folk, country, bluegrass and rock and roll to this day.

On a personal level the work of Holger Petersen with an honorary doctorate of Athabasca University ( 2002) and the highest Canadian award (Order of Canada) was honored in 2003. In 2008 he received the " Keeping The Blues Alive Award from the Blues Foundation in Memphis.
