Stony River in the catchment area of the Kuskokwim River

The Stony River is a 306 km long left tributary of the Kuskokwim River in the southwestern interior of Alaska.

The river rises in the western Alaska Range from the Stony Glacier. It flows initially southwards, turns to the north-west to the north of Lake Clark National Park and flows into the Kuskokwim River Sleetmute.

The descriptive name ( " stony ", German stony) probably comes from prospectors and was documented in 1908 by AG Maddren from the United States Geological Survey. LA Sagoskin of the Imperial Russian Navy had noted on his Alaska expedition in the years 1842-44 as a designation of the Eskimos for the River " R ( eka ) Tkhalkhuk ". The natives used, also according Sagoskin, the name " Mantashtano ".
