Stop and Smell the Roses is the ninth album, or the eighth studio album by Ringo Starr after the breakup of the Beatles. It was on 20 November 1981 in the UK (USA: October 26, 1981) published. In the U.S., the album reached # 98 in the UK and in Germany it could not be placed in the charts.

Genesis

After the publication of his last two albums Ringo the 4th and Bad Boy, the two were commercially least successful to date, Ringo Starr had no record deal for Continental Europe more in 1978. In this situation, he went with Russ Ballard as producer in July 1978 in Copenhagen ( Denmark) to record a new album in the Sweet Silence Studios. After the failures in his musical career, Ringo Starr had to cope with several other private 1979 crisis situations. In April, he broke down and had to be in Monte Carlo undergo surgery. On 28 November 1979, a fire destroyed his home in Los Angeles. Starr was uninjured, but a large part of his collected memorabilia from the Beatles' time was lost. Ringo Starr decided the musical concept of his three albums Ringo, Goodnight Vienna Ringo's Rotogravure and to revive, in which he again invited prominent musician friends as well as John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison, to support him musically with songs.

The first recordings took place from 11 to 21 July 1980 in the Super Bear Studios in France instead, where he worked with Paul McCartney as producer the songs Private Property, Attention, Sure to Fall ( In Love with You) and You Can not Fight Lightning grossed. It followed from 11 August to 27 September in the Devonshire Sound Studios in Los Angeles the recordings of the songs You've Got a Nice Way, Red and Black Blues and Wake Up (produced by Stephen Stills ), and Dead Giveaway and Brandy that were produced by Ronnie Wood and Ringo Starr. Completion of the songs took place on various dates in December 1980 and from January to February 1981.

With Harry Nilsson Producer Ringo took in November 1980 in the Evergreen Recording Studios in Burbank and from 1 to 4 December 1980 in the Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas, the title Drumming Is My Madness, Stop and Take the Time to Smell the Roses Back Off Boogaloo and on. Back Off Boogaloo was a re-recording of the single A - side in March 1972. Even with these songs and was completed only in September 1981.

As the sixth producer, including Ringo Starr, George Harrison served from 19 to 25 November 1980 in his own recording studio Friars Park Studio, Henley -on-Thames ( FPSHOT ) three more songs were played. Wreck My Brain and You Belong to Me were used for the album, while re-recorded an early version of the song All Those Years Ago by George Harrison and was used for his album Somewhere in England.

Single releases

Wreck My Brain

The first single wreck My Brain / Drumming Is My Madness appeared previously in October 1981 and reached number 38 in the U.S., UK and Germany could not place in the charts themselves. In Canada, a different mix of Wreck My Brain on the published there single was released exclusively.

Private Property

In the U.S. and Germany was published in January 1982 as the second single Private Property / Stop and Take the Time to Smell the Roses, who could not place in the charts in both countries.

In November 1994, the single wreck My Brain / Private Property as a 7 " Jukeboxsingle was released in the U.S. at the CD release.

For the songs Wreck My Brain and Private Property music videos were recorded for promotional purposes.

In January 1982, it was shot with Paul and Linda McCartney, alongside Ringo Starr, as another leading actor for promotional purposes of the ten -minute film The Cooler, in which the songs Private Property, Attention and Sure to Fall are included.

Reissues

First published in CD format was made in the USA in September 1994 at Capitol Records with six bonus tracks. The CD release from 1994 has not yet been newly remastered.

In June 2010, the CD on the label MaxCat Records re-released with a different cover and with only ten songs.

For advertising purposes for the ( re-) release of the albums Stop and Take the Time to Smell the Roses and Old Wave published Right Stuff a promotional CD that contains the following six songs: Wreck My Brain, Dead Giveaway, Private Property (longer unpublished version ), Be My Baby, In My Car and She's About a Mover.
