Stora Karlsö

Stora Karlsö is a 2.5 km ² island Swedish west of Gotland, which can be reached from May to September daily from Klintehamn by boat. The island is one of the outstanding nature conservation areas in Sweden and in the possession of Karlsö Scramble och Djurskyddsförenings AB. Stora Karlsö is designated as Natura 2000 site. Walks on the ornithological and botanical interest, Eiland be accompanied by a knowledgeable guide. Not far is the sister island of Lilla Karlsö.

Stora Förvar

Stora Förvar is a 25 m deep cave on the north side of the island. Your about four meters thick cultural layer has been studied in the 19th century. In the archaeological material, which represents mainly the period between about 5000 and 1500 BC, protrude bones of humans and animals and pieces of pottery out. Harpoon heads have fish or seal hunting. In the upper layers there were findings which indicate that the cave was visited during the Bronze and Iron Ages and the Middle Ages.

Lauphargi and Rösju

Lauphargi and Rösju are two of the big Rösen. They date from the Bronze Age, which is set here 1500-1000 BC. At the height of 4 m and about 25 m measured round hill on the southwest side is the special shape of the crater hill, which is also present in Kauparve. The cairn grave is likely from the late Bronze Age (ca. 1500-1000 BC).

At the highest point of the island is " Röjsu " that covered by an ash tree or something larger Roese who already Linnaeus described. In the cairn grave, which has a diameter of 28 m, is still growing those ash, the mentioned Linnaeus in his Gotland travel.
