Storage Technology Corporation

Storage Technology Corporation ( StorageTek ) was a global IT company offering a broad portfolio of data storage products. StorageTek had its headquarters in Louisville, Colorado ( USA) with production facilities in Ponce, Puerto Rico and Toulouse ( France). The German branch most recently employed about 350 employees in ten offices. Since the acquisition ( merger ) in 2005 by Sun Microsystems StorageTek has been integrated with its approximately 7,000 employees in this global group. Following the acquisition of Sun by Oracle Corporation in 2010 Oracle StorageTek operates as a division for tape libraries.

History

The company was founded by the former IBM engineers Jesse Aweida, Juan Rodriguez, Thomas Kavanagh and Zoltan Herger. 1986 Storage Technology Corporation announced the official abbreviation StorageTek.

The company was twelve years competition in the markets dominated by IBM Tape Storage, from the Printer business until in 1987, the automated tape library introduced ( magnetic tape robot). It has defined the information lifecycle management as a framework for cost- efficient and economical storage in the late 20th century.

On 2 June 2005, Sun Microsystems announced the purchase Storage Technology Corporation for 4.1 billion U.S. dollars, or $ 37.00 per share. On 31 August 2005, the takeover was sealed by contract. In Germany Sun Germany completed the acquisitions of businesses Storage Technology GmbH and SeeBeyond until April 2006.
