Storm tides of the North Sea

This list of storm surges on the North Sea comprises a representation of storm surges and flooding following the North Sea.

Reliability of the data

Since many chronicles refer to Vorangegange, some of storm surges were taken up several times in the literature, so that the number of alleged storm surges has multiplied. Even a considerable part of the more recent chronicles based on early modern sources, some of which are fictional kind.

The alleged victim numbers before the 16th century based largely on rough estimates or even imagination. Therefore, these data must be treated with skepticism. The effects of different storm surges are difficult to detect until the 14th or 15th century, and often hardly to moor at certain events. Only since the 19th century are reliable records of the water levels. The water levels are, for example, by the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency ( BSH) and documented by the Waterways and Shipping Administration of the Federation ( WSV). The Agency of Roads, Bridges and Waters ( LSBG ) in Hamburg has evaluated the storm surges since 1900 and provides extensive material on this.
