Stornoway

Stornoway is the main town of the island of Lewis and Harris, and by far the largest town in the entire archipelago of the Outer Hebrides off the west coast of Scotland. The town has about 8,000 inhabitants.

The place bears the Gaelic name Steòrnabhagh.

Stornoway has always been the best natural harbor in the archipelago and was fixed already in 1100 with a castle.

In the 19th century Stornoway was the booming herring fishing and processing an industrial center.

Today Stornoway is still an important fishing port. The ferry on British mainland to Ullapool is equally important for residents and tourists. Since 1937 there is an airport, at first primarily for military purposes. Among the most important attractions of the city include the few hundred meters to the west located mansion Lews Castle.
