Storuman Municipality

Storuman is a municipality (in Swedish kommun ) in the Swedish province of Västerbotten County and the historic province of Lapland. The main town of the municipality is Storuman.

Through the village the Europa roads lead 12 and 45 ( Inlandsvägen ) that intersect the main town of Storuman, and the Inland Railway and the railway line Hällnäs - Storuman. When Gunnar is also located the Storuman Airport.

Geography

The community extends approximately 240 kilometers along the Umeälven from the Norwegian border to the southeast. Half of the municipality is occupied by high mountains, where the Norra Sydertoppen with 1,768 m is the highest mountain. The northernmost parts of the mountains are part of the nature reserve Vindelfjällen whose survey is discussed to the National Park.

Numerous long narrow mountain lakes form the headwaters of the Umeälven, the further south widens the lake Storuman. At its southern tip is the capital of the municipality.

Economy

Forestry and wood processing industry are the traditional sectors of the economy. Tourism has increased in recent decades in importance. In Barsele the company Northland explores a gold deposits.

Attractions

Tärnaby, 125 kilometers northwest of Storuman in the E-12 is, together with the nearby town Hemavan one of the major winter sports centers in Sweden. In Tärnaby there is a seed museum and a ski museum in Hemavan is a botanical garden with mountain plants and an exhibition on the geology, flora, fauna and cultural and historical significance of the mountain. In Hemavan the Royal Trail, a long distance hiking trail that begins in Abisko ends.
