Storyboard

A storyboard scene or book is a pictorial version of a screenplay or a visualization of a concept or an idea.

Generally

Storyboards are used for visualization of screenplays and planning of individual scenes by sketchy representations before the actual shooting began. In this case, the written script is first converted into images and enriched with the concrete design such as Point of View, and setting size. The storyboard is increasingly used as an organizing agent as part of a creativity technique, and thus used for thematic sorting of posts. The invention and use of storyboards goes back to the Disney studios. In terms of design and use, as two-dimensional visualization of narrative themes, the storyboard is related to the comic. The signatories of storyboards is called a storyboard artist.

Film

A storyboard is a sequential image sequence, the settings of a film: displays, a multimedia production or other formats of the performing arts (in this setting the camera). The storyboard is usually implemented according to the specifications of the director, including the cameraman of the film with a familiar language Illustrator. Often, the storyboard artist is actively involved in brainstorming on possible settings. Especially in the first advertising storyboards or animatics often arise before a director is hired for the planned clip. Based on the boards all can understand the intention of the makers in relation to setting sizes, perspective, perspectives, and sometimes even illumination, color or overall aesthetics clearer and work better together in the film involved.

Storyboards are made especially for the following media:

  • Cinema, especially in movies with then necessary post-processing on the computer and in the preparation of complex, resource-intensive sequences
  • 3D Character Animation
  • Advertising (TV, print media)

As well as stage shows, concerts, musicals etc., just all productions that are very complex and expensive.

Radio

Also in the production of radio programs are an important planning storyboards help.

Usually, a storyboard of multiple columns. In the left column are the types of content, such as speech, music, noise / atmosphere observations. The top or bottom row is for the specified time. In each column from left to right are the respective contents, usually characterized by the following key points:

  • Music: title and artist, genre, type of intros and outros.
  • Comments: major fading, any necessary corrections, sources
  • Language: thematic focus, keywords or whole texts
  • Sounds: sound character

Recently there is also the possibility storyboards using specially optimized programs to create on the computer. While users of these programs described as extremely useful and labor saving - for example, need to be created for new settings only some image details changed and no completely new drawings - critics point to the limitations of available objects and options that are not on the almost unlimited come close possibilities of pure drawings.

Online Journalism

When designing websites, a storyboard is also generated. It gives an overview of the structure of the site including linking and illustrates possible ways the user in navigation.

Creativity technique

The more complex the content to be presented, the more important is the structure of the argument. The storyboard approach is a method to implement complex subjects in understandable and compelling presentations and for example in lessons. The method consists of powerful techniques by which information is organized and displayed so that the audience can follow the argument as a gripping story. Aspects are in particular:

  • Information on key messages focus; that is, many facts and information to be condensed into a precise, clear and understandable message - the core of your statement.
  • Information to structure a coherent argument: With the key messages a logical, coherent and convincing case is built - the storyline.

Software Development

The storyboard technique is successfully used for the visualization of user interfaces, for example, as a result of screen contents. The use of storyboards essentially corresponds to the mock-up technique in software development (paper prototypes, see user story, use case ).
