Straight No Chaser (group)

Straight No Chaser is an American singing group from Bloomington, Indiana.

Career

Straight No Chaser began in 1996 as a student a cappella group at Indiana University in Bloomington. The name comes from the jazz piece Straight No Chaser by Thelonious Monk. They performed with traditional and modern pieces and also had great success beyond the University. So they recorded several albums and even had a performance at Carnegie Hall. When, after three years, the first members of graduating her studies and the university left, they were replaced by new students. This tradition has continued, and to this day is this university singing group under the same name on.

Ten years after the beginning met the founding members in 1996, to perform together again. To this end, they made a DVD with the recording of a concert from 1998. Their unusual and humorous version of the Christmas classic The Twelve Days of Christmas, in which they had built short excerpts of other songs like Toto's Africa, they found one on YouTube. She was very popular and accessed in December 2007 alone over seven million copies. About the Internet and Atlantic Records took notice of the group and offered them a record deal. Eight of the ten founding members plus two additional singers from later vintages then formed the new group under the old name ( later there were more member changes ).

End of 2008, Straight No Chaser produced a Christmas album. It was followed by several prominent television appearances, which helped the album Holiday Spirits to # 4 on the Holiday Album ( Special Charts for Christmas albums) and number 46 of the official sales charts. The Twelve Days of Christmas was a radio hit that made ​​it to the Top 5 of the Adult Contemporary charts. A year later, they brought with Christmas Cheers out a second Christmas album that was as successful as the debut. Then they were planning another album of a cappella pop songs for the year 2010.
