History

The history of the Berlin U -Bahn is closely connected to the Stralauer Thor Train Station. After the groundbreaking ceremony on September 10, 1896, the work progressed relatively quickly, so that the eastern part Stralauer between Thor and Potsdamer Platz the new "electric elevated and subway " was opened on 18 February 1902. Thus, one of the starting points of the Berlin U -Bahn history of the station dar.

The station was located directly behind the upper tree bridge; the construction of the two buildings was time instead of one after the other. After, designed by Otto Stahn bridge was completed in 1896, the station commissioned by Siemens & Halske, headed by Paul Wittig was built in 1898-1900. For the design of the structure of a specific architect is no longer determine the design came from the site office of Siemens & Halske and roughly corresponds to a combination of the stations Prince Street and Görlitz Station. The station had in his opening two 3.5 meter wide and 73 meter long side platforms, the first sufficient for six-car trains. The southern staircase for the station, which was 7.5 meters above street level, was located laterally. This had to be built on a single traffic island due to the limited space, a covered bridge - similar to the Prince Street station - led to the platform. Architecturally the station fit but only limited to the adjacent Upper tree bridge.

After Orthographic Conference of 1901, the "h" disappeared from the station name. On September 15, 1924, the station after the same, also located at the eastern end of the Upper tree bridge was " Easthaven " named.

An air raid on 10 March 1945, a bomb hit the previously undamaged high station east harbor destroyed almost completely. While the elevated railway between Warschauer Brücke (today: Warschauer Straße ) and Silesian gate could be taken on October 14, 1945 single track in operation, the SNB decided not to rebuild the Eastern Harbour train station again due to the proximity to the terminus Warsaw Bridge. You could eliminate all remnants, today announced the retaining walls are still visible. The East Harbour Station was the only subway station in Berlin, which was not rebuilt.
