Strategic and Defence Studies Centre

The Strategic and Defence Studies Centre ( SDSC ) ( German: Center for Strategic and Defence Studies ) is part of the Research School of Pacific and Asian Studies at the Australian National University. As the longest established center in Australia for the study of strategy and defense policy as well as other security-related fields, the SDSC has been for many years one of the leading regional and global think tanks for security and defense policy. The current head of the SDSC is Professor Hugh White.

History

The Centre was established in 1966 by Professor T.B. Millar founded to promote the study of Australian, regional and global strategic and defense-related areas .. The main priority of the SDSC it is, " [to] Contribute to the national public debate on strategic, defense and wider security issues [ ... ], foster regional dialogue and interactions on security questions [ ... ] publish top quality scholarly research [ and] deliver high-quality graduate teaching "

Activities

To achieve this, the SDSC published audited in peer-reviewed Canberra Papers on Strategy and Defence and SDSC Working Papers. In addition, it regularly organizes conferences, seminars and forums with key national and international academics, policy makers and representatives of the military. To promote high-quality research in the triangle of safety, strategy and defense policy, the SDSC provides since 2003 in collaboration with the Australian National University and the Australian Department of Defence, named after a former Australian Minister of Defence, Sir Arthur Tange PhD Scholarships in Strategic & Defence Policy to outstanding graduate students.

The staff of the SDSC regularly organize lectures and seminars at other faculties of the ANU as well as other national and international universities. In addition, the center supports various Australian government agencies in an advisory capacity and was a crucial part in the establishment of the Section for Strategic Studies at Australia's main institution for defense training, the Australian Defence College. The SDSC helps the Australian Department of Defence and the Australian Ministry of Foreign Trade and matter in the treatment and evaluation of strategic and defense policy issues and to organize specific training courses for the staff of these ministries.

At the SDSC the Graduate Studies in Strategy and Defence Program is (in German about: Program for Graduate Studies in Strategy and Defence ) attached, which, in contrast to most other think tanks, offers an academic education to secure areas for post-graduate students. Every year, promotes the SDSC under this program up to three outstanding students with a TB Millar Scholarship.
