Stratoscope

Strato Scope is the name of two balloon- borne telescopes mirror, were carried out with the help of 1957-1971, especially studies in the visible and infrared region of the sun, galaxies, and red giants. Initiator of the Strato Scope projects was Martin Schwarzschild. Strato Scope I had a mirror diameter of 30.48 inches. The successor devices Strato Scope II had a mirror diameter of 91.4 inches and a weight of 3.5 tons. Both were operated by remote control. As image detectors were initially photographic films, and later television cameras.
