Streakline

A coating line (English streakline ) draws in fluid dynamics according to the path of several particles which are successively released at the same position of a flow field. An illustrative example is a chain of buoys, which are successively set from a dock into a river or the exhaust stream of a chimney.

String lines with power lines, railway lines and time lines part of the visualization concept of " characteristic lines " for flow fields. In the case of stationary currents to flow line, string line and line do not differ.

Calculation

If the time-dependent velocity field is known, string lines can be calculated by numerical integration of the following initial value problems:

Parameterized by the outgoing string line.
