Strenči

Strenči ( German Stackeln ) is a small town in northern Latvia, and the center of the eponymous administrative unit ( lett Strenču Novads ).

History

The first time found the place on a map of the postal route from Riga to Tartu ( Tartu estnisch. ) listed. In the 18th century tree trunks of the surrounding estates were rafted down the Gauja here. The opening of the station Stackeln at the Riga railway line - Pskov in 1889 brought economical growth. From 1903, the Psychiatric Clinic of the province of Livonia was built on the initiative of the Livonian knights, which was one of the most modern in Europe. The buildings and parks were designed by August Reinberg. After 1945, industrial enterprises were settled, so that the population in 1979 was 2666.
