Strichen Stone Circle

Strokes is a stone circle of type Recumbent Stone Circle (RSC ), a type which is very common in the region Grampian. It is located on a hill south of the Brewery Road, about 0.8 km south-west of Strichen in Aberdeenshire near the north west coast of Scotland.

Strokes is a stone circle 15 meters in diameter, surrounded by a circle of smaller non-original stones, which presumably are designed to keep the cattle. The state of the circuit, which has only survived thanks to the efforts of the community is poor, and his whole modern history is an example of the careless handling of cultural goods.

1773 visited James Boswell ( 1740-1795 ), who had already been here 15 years earlier, and Samuel Johnson ( 1709-1784 ) on the pitch. But they found only a modest rest In 1830 a tenant removed the remaining stones. The circle, which the landlord seems to have re-created, has little in common with the built about 4000 years ago the original, he even lay elsewhere. The farmer has removed in 1965, these re- circle with the bulldozer. In 1979 the local council an initiative to make the circle again. In the course of a four-year archaeological excavation, the old location were identified and built the circuit using the original stones of local volunteers in its original location again.
