Stridor
Abnormal breath sounds by narrowing of the airways is called stridor (Latin stridor, hiss ', ' pipe ', plural Stridores ).
After the appearance at A - ( inspiration ) and exhalation ( expiration), a distinction:
- Inspiratory stridor: breath sounds by inhalation, typical of constriction or obstruction of the upper airway ( larynx, trachea, main bronchi ). Example for causes: epiglottitis, croup, croup, thyroid enlargement ( goiter), foreign body aspiration, benign or malignant tumors of the respiratory tract or in organs in the mediastinum, one-sided or double-sided vocal cord paralysis.
- Expiratory stridor: breath sounds on the exhale, typical of obstructive lung diseases, such as bronchial asthma
After the localization of the constriction can be distinguished:
- Stridor nasal spine: narrowing in the nose ( Nasus ), mostly as a " sniffle "
- Stridor pharyngeal: constriction in the throat ( pharynx ), mostly as a " snoring "
- Stridor laryngealis: constriction in the larynx (voice box ), mostly as "pipes"
- Stridor trachealis: constriction in the windpipe ( trachea), mostly as a " hum "
