Streifenpipra ( Machaeropterus regulus )

The Streifenpipra ( Machaeropterus regulus ) is a South American passerine bird of the family of Manakin.

Features

The 10 cm long Streifenpipra is colored olive green upper side and lower side is striped red and white. The male has a scarlet hood.

Occurrence

The Streifenpipra lives in the lower and middle canopy of the rain and secondary forest in Colombia, Venezuela, eastern Ecuador, northeastern Peru and parts of Brazil.

Reproduction

During the breeding season the males gather in clearings and lead to mating dances to attract females. The cup-shaped nest made of woven plant parts is built between two branches in a tree or bush. The nest from one to two eggs are incubated for two to three weeks. The young birds fledge after two weeks. The nest building, brooding and rearing of young to be done solely by the female.
