Hydrolagus matallanasi

Hydrolagus matallanasi is a very rare Knorpelfischart from the subclass of chimaeras, which occurs on the coast of Brazil at depths of 400-750 meters in the southwestern Atlantic. The species was only in 2001 by a Brazilian research team led by Jesus Matallanas by which this species is also named discovered. She lives on deep coral reefs, which are formed by gorgonians, stony corals, tube sponges and crinoids.

Features

Hydrolagus matallanasi is about 70 cm long. From other species of the genus Hydrolagus to Hydrolagus matallanasi differs mainly by its brown, patterned with irregular spots and dots coloring. The ventral side of the body, facing the edge of the second dorsal fin and pectoral fins are whitish base. The tooth plates are striped in two colors and yellowish - gray. The seated before the first dorsal fin is as long as or slightly longer than the head. The elongated second dorsal fin is emarginate in the middle. The pectoral fins are remarkably long and extend to the rear edge of the pelvic fin base. Eye diameter is only slightly smaller than the head portion in front of the eyes is long.
