History

The name comes from the Count of Spoleto, Ugone ( † about 1036 to 1048 ), from the first Castrum Hugoni, then Castrugone, Strungone and ultimately Stroncone was. Other documents of the same century attest to the place at that time already owning a castle ( Castello), a city wall and a political proximity to Narni. Pope Innocent III. gave the place 1215, the municipal autonomy, which led to close ties to the Guelphs. At the end of the 14th century, the community came together with Narni in the direct sphere of influence of the Papal States. Economically, Stroncone developed further with the establishment of the Monte di Pietà ( 1466 ) and the Monte Frumentario ( Wheat Consortium, 1489 ). Except for the occupation by the troops of Napoleon the place remained so until 1860 when the Papal States to be with Umbria during the Risorgimento are part of Italy. 1929, the town was divided into the newly founded province of Terni.
