The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM -IV (SCID ) is a common method for the diagnosis of mental disorders according to the diagnostic manual DSM -IV.

Variants and their applications

The SCID- I is used to detect and diagnosis of selected mental syndromes and disorders outpatient or inpatient patients, as in the DSM- IV axis 1 ( " Clinical syndrome " ) are defined:

  • Affective disorders
  • Psychotic disorders
  • Disorders due to psychoactive substances
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Somatoform disorders
  • Eating Disorders
  • Adjustment disorders

In addition, coding possibilities for the assessment of axis III ( physical disorders ) and axis V ( psycho- social functioning level ) are offered. All diagnoses are collected in longitudinal and cross-sectional as well as additional information about the onset and progress.

The SCID- II, however, can be diagnosed on Axis II, the ten and the two personality disorders listed in the Annex of the DSM -IV.

Sequence (SCID -I)

Technically, the SCID- I is a guided interview: The interviewer asks certain questions and coded the responses (eg " symptom does not exist" / "Symptoms subliminally present" ) in order to make a differential diagnosis at the end of may. It can, however, ( eg questionnaires such as the Beck Depression Inventory, BDI) supplemented when required by standardized survey instruments. The SCID begins with a short section for encoding data and biosocial research documentation. At the beginning of the interview concludes with a short exploration guide. The exploration gives an overview of current and former complaints and symptoms, before systematically asked in the course according to the above specific symptoms.

The execution time of the SCID- I is at inpatient psychiatric patients about 100 minutes.

Sequence (SCID -II)

In the SCID- II is a two-step process, consisting of a questionnaire and a subsequent interview. The questionnaire is used to screen for the characteristics of the twelve recognized personality disorders. In the following interview, then only need to be asked those questions for which " yes " response was checked in a questionnaire. This approach reduces the execution time.

The execution time of the SCID- II can be estimated at about 30 minutes.
