Strzelin

Strzelin [ stʃɛlin ] ( German: chasing ) is a town in Lower Silesian Voivodeship in Poland. Strzelin is the seat of powiat Strzeliński and lies on the Ohle at the foot of the mountains Strehlener ( Wzgórza Strzelinskie ), about 40 km south of Wroclaw. The city has about 12,000 inhabitants, who live mainly by agriculture. The granite quarries in Strzelin are among the largest in Europe.

History

The city suffered at the end of the Second World War in 1945 heavy destruction, because it was hard fought between the Wehrmacht and the Red Army. Chasing is the birthplace of Paul Ehrlich, Herbert Goldschmidt and Manfred Geisler. Chasing (city) belonged until 1945 to the district chasing in the Prussian province of Lower Silesia.

Since the 18th century -based chasing with his environment, a significant ethnic minority tschechischsprachiger religious refugees and settlers from Bohemia. The place Hussinetz (now Gęsiniec ) was considered as the most important settlement area in the district of chasing this successor to the communities of Jan Hus.
