Stureparken

Sture Parking is both a park and a street in Östermalm district. The park measures about 100 by 50 meters and is located on the corner Östermalmsgatan / Sturegatan. The same road runs on the long side of the park parallel to Sturegatan of the Östermalmsgatan to Valhallavägen.

Between 1670 and 1866 a part of the park area was used as a cemetery. First, the cemetery for sailors from the nearby naval port was provided on Skeppsholmen. With the relocation of the port by the early 1680s the cemetery Karlskrona for the general public has been released. In the year of the plague in 1710 and in years with many cholera deaths mass graves have been excavated here. However, the existing earth was not enough usually to cover the bodies, so also the earth had to be transported. The last burial took place in 1834 and 1880 were still some grave stones in the cemetery. Towards the end of the 19th century, the parish of Hedwig Eleonora church wanted to build a chapel or elementary school on the property. However, because of uncertainties regarding the ownership prevailed, it came to a dispute, after its end in 1906, the current park was created.
