Sturgeon Bay is a small town ( with a status of "City" ) in Door County in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. In 2010, Sturgeon Bay had 9144 inhabitants, making it the largest city in the county.

Geography

Sturgeon Bay is located at 44 ° 49 'north latitude and 87 ° 22' west longitude, covers 29.3 km ² ( 24.9 km ² of it land) at an altitude of 178 meters above sea level on the Door Peninsula, the Green Bay and Lake Michigan separates. Due to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal within the city, the northern part of the peninsula was actually an island.

The nearest major cities are Green Bay (about 65 km southwest), Appleton ( about 110 km southwest ) and Sheboygan ( about 130 km south ). Madison, the capital of the state is located about 280 km south-west and Chicago, the nearest big city, about 350 km south.

Infrastructure

Through the town Wisconsin Highways 42 and 57 lead the highways running in the city on the same route and guide it over the Sturgeon Bay Bridge, a bascule bridge over the Sturgeon Bay, in the northeast of Sturgeon Bay beyond.

The town was connected to the railway network of Ahnapee and Western Railway. The line was closed and used as Ahnapee State Trail.

With the Austin Straubel International Airport is located 80 kilometers southwest of the city the nearest airport.

History

The first settlers to the present area was Increase Claflin, who built a house in 1835 at the Sturgeon Bay. In the period 1872-1881 the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal was built, which facilitated the navigation between Green Bay and the Chicagoland area.

Population

According to the census in 2010 lived in Sturgeon Bay 9144 people in 4288 households. The population density was 367.2 inhabitants per square kilometer. In the 4288 households lived statistically 2.07 per person.
