Stuttgart–Augsburg new and upgraded railway

The new and upgraded line (NBS ) Stuttgart -Augsburg is a railway project of the Federal Republic of Germany.

It is run in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2003 as urgent requirement. In addition to a new line between Stuttgart and Ulm, with a top speed of 250 km / h parallel to the existing route between Stuttgart and Ulm ( Filstalbahn ) sections of the railway line Augsburg- Ulm will be extended for a speed of up to 200 km / h speed rail line. 2015 are planned by the federal government investment of over 1.2 billion euros.

Upon completion of the construction and expansion measures at a length of 148 km, the travel time between Stuttgart and Augsburg from 93 minutes to fall to 63 minutes ( pre-construction ). The total cost was estimated at 4.233 billion euros in 2012.

An earlier alternative planning was the upgraded line / new line Plochingen Günzburg.

Project construction

The project consists in the details of these sub-projects:

  • Stuttgart 21 and new Stuttgart - Wendlingen: Replacement of the existing Stuttgart main station ( terminus ) through an underground through station with subsequent Filderstadt tunnel towards Wendlingen, with connections to Stuttgart Airport Filderstadt over the station.
  • New Wendlingen -Ulm: construction of a high-speed line over the Swabian Alb with a largely parallel course to the A 8 and four-track development of the Danube bridge in Ulm.
  • Neu-Ulm 21: laying the railway tracks and the train station of New Ulm under the street level.
  • Upgrading of the Ulm -Augsburg between New Ulm and Neuoffingen from two to three tracks and for speeds up to 200 km / h

The new and upgraded line Stuttgart -Augsburg is part of the Trans European Network project " Priority axis No 17 " EU Paris-Budapest/Bratislava, the so-called "Magistrale for Europe". Already for the planning phase of the project was therefore co-financed up to 50 percent by the EU. The EU Construction grants expected to total 10 to 20 percent.

After starting the travel time for high-speed traffic between Stuttgart and Munich with a stop in Ulm and Augsburg less than one and a half hours instead of two and a quarter hours (as of 2013) will be. The construction of the new line is part of the concept of " net 21 " of the Deutsche Bahn. According to fast traffic go through this, and pervert the slow trains on the existing line in the Fils Valley.

History

A Preliminary saw in 1970 for the construction of a 200 km long high-speed railway axis of Schwetzingen and Stuttgart Plochingen to Augsburg. On a third the length of the designed for around 300 km / h line should run in the tunnel. In Stuttgart, the construction of an underground through station for the high-speed traffic under the main station was considered. These plans were later no longer be pursued.

According to the German Federal Railways have the need arise to provide additional tracks on the whole corridor between Stuttgart and Augsburg due to the increased traffic expected as a result of the German reunification. Makes the capital cost of originally about two to about five billion marks had risen. The planned investments of large-scale variants K and H were thus given as 4.9 billion DM. The ICE journey times between Augsburg and Stuttgart should be at a maximum speed of 250 km / h at 61 minutes (H- variant ) or 65 minutes ( K- variant).

A report expected around 1991, by 2010 an increase in the number of trains between Stuttgart and Augsburg around 250 trains per day. In freight transport, it was assumed that about 70 percent of the trains would have loads of up to 1,500 t. About 30 percent have been assumed to be fast trains having a weight of about 800 to 1200 T; they should operate during the day makes sense on existing routes and at night use the new line.

A mid-1991, initially introduced report commissioned by the Federal presented the economics of the project in question.

The estimated total costs of the project ( with the favored H- line ) in 1992 were, for the price at January 1, 1990, at 4.15 billion DM The benefit- cost ratio of the overall project of the new and upgraded line Stuttgart -Ulm -Augsburg 1992, based on different variants in a study with 3.7 to 4.4 quantified. The planned investment costs were, depending on the variant, 4.35 to 4.89 billion marks ( Price as of: January 1, 1991). We were not expecting this 126-132 passenger trains and 72 freight trains and 75 per day.

In the fall of 1993, the German Federal Railroad calculated for the overall project, the price level from January 1990, with total investment of four billion DM you walked away from being able to start with the realization of the project nor in the second half of the 1990s. In Stuttgart, thereby the preservation of the train station and the use of the inventory infrastructure to Esslingen- Mettingen was provided. From there, a tunnel should lead to the Filderebene, which should lead to a along the A8 motorway trassierte new line. Ulm and Neu -Ulm should be passed overhead, the stock route from Ulm to Augusburg be expanded to four tracks. In the final state a journey between Stuttgart and Augsburg was provided by an hour.
