Styrofoam (musician)

Arne Van Petegem (born 4 November 1973) is a Belgian musician who is best known under the pseudonyms of Styrofoam and Tin Foil Star. His music is largely attributable to the genre Indietronic.

Life

Van Petegem attended a music school and began at the age of 12 years with the play of guitar. At 15, he founded, influenced by Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr. and Hüsker Dü, his own band. From the late 1990s he published his first works on recordings. In 1997, the cassette album Repeat After Me was published under the pseudonym Brassneck. A year later, the album followed the band Technicolor Dreams In Amber # 2, contributed to the Van Petegem vocals and guitar.

Bored of playing in rock bands, he began to experiment with electronic music. Starting in 1999, then came the first publications as Tin Foil Star. This appeared on the label Atomic Recordings, which was run by a record store in which Van Petegem was active at that time. About the distribution of Atomic Recordings Van Petegem learned Thomas Morr know that the Berlin label Morr Music shortly thereafter founded. He became better known in the electronica scene with his first published on Morr Music albums under the pseudonym Styrofoam.

In 2004, Van Petegem was involved in the founding of Dieter Sermeus ' band project The Go Find, with whom he recorded the album Miami, which also appeared on Morr Music. Van Petegem also appeared live on together with Sermeus. In the same year the Styrofoam album Nothings Lost, on the Van Petegem expanded its hitherto largely instrumental electronica- rehearsed pieces to singing, rape and classical instruments appeared. For the recordings Van Petegem has worked with the musicians Valerie Trebeljahr ( Lali Puna ), Andrew Kenny (The American Analog Set), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie, The Postal Service ), Bent Van Looy ( Das Pop ), Markus Acher ( the Notwist ), Miki Yoshimura ( Pitchtuner ) and the rapper alias ( anticon ) together. For live performances presented Van Petegem a band together.

After several albums on Morr Music, he joined the label Nettwerk. There, in 2008 the album A Thousand Words, on which, among other things Jim Adkins ( Jimmy Eat World ), Blake Hazard ( The Submarines ) and Josh Rouse appeared appeared as a guest musician.

In addition to his work as a musician Van Petegem worked for young musicians in various funded projects and worked in Antwerp Trix music center. He is married and has two children.
