Suba District

Suba District is a district in the Nyanza Province in Kenya. The district capital is Mbita Point. The Suba District is divided into five divisions: Mbita, Lambwe, Central, and Gwassi Mfangano. The district is bounded on the west by Lake Victoria. In addition to the 1055 km ² land area are still 1190 km ² water surface of Lake Victoria to the district. 16 islands in Lake Victoria also fall to the Suba District, the largest being Rusina Iceland and Mfangano Iceland. In Lambwe Valley in the Central Division is the Ruma National Park.

Economy

More than 50 % of the population live from agriculture, 40 % live on fishing and farming. Crops grown among other cotton and sunflower.

Health service

In Suba District in 2005 there were 21 health care facilities, including two hospitals. At a doctor more than 85,000 potential patients come. Mainly malaria, respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases are treated. 80 % of hospital beds are occupied with average HIV - positive patients. The HIV prevalence rate in Suba District was 34 % in 2002. The infant mortality rate in 2002 was 11%, before their 5th birthday 13% of the children died. The Suba District Hospital has 50 beds.

Education

The Suba District decreed in 2005 over 172 primary schools and 12 secondary schools.
