Subandrio

Subandrio (also Soebandrio; born September 15, 1914 in Kepanjen, East Java; † 3 July 2004 in Jakarta ) was the Indonesian foreign minister and deputy prime minister under President Sukarno. After the alleged coup attempt by the G30S 1965 he spent 29 years in prison.

Life

Subandrio was born in Kepanjen, East Java. As a medical student, he was active in the independence movement and during the Second World War he joined forces with the anti-Japanese resistance fighters.

After the war ended in 1945 he became a follower of the nationalist leader Sukarno and sent as special envoy to Europe. From 1954 to 1956 he was ambassador to the Soviet Union.
