Subaru 1000

1000 Subaru Coupe

The Subaru 1000 was the first front-wheel drive cars, the Fuji Heavy Industries produced in Japanese " small car " classification from 1966. It was the first model of Subaru with a boxer engine. Until then, Subaru produced models such as the Subaru 360 and Subaru Sambar had rear-engine, rear-wheel drive and were Kei cars.

In 1960 the management of Subaru decided to make a successor to the presented prototypes Subaru 1500 with the code name "A- 5" to develop. Subaru wanted to offer a car that four passengers comfortable advancement offered and for the buyers an alternative to the contemporary Toyota Publica, Datsun 110/210 or Mitsubishi Colt should be 600. To have serious chances on the market had to be better than the competition and therefore decided to reduce the engine noise by moved the motor forward, where, however, maintained originally driving the rear wheels and a propeller shaft should be installed. All four wheels were individually suspended. The only other Japanese companies at that time which used an air-cooled boxer engine was Toyota with the model Publica.

In 1963, Subaru revised its prototype to the new project "A- 4", now with a smaller 923 cc engine and front wheel drive. This construction was finally introduced as the Subaru 1000. For quiet operation, the engine was water-cooled instead of air. The Subaru 1000 was formally (now Capitol Hotel Tokyu ) presented on 21 October 1965 at the Hilton Hotel in Tokyo. From 14 May 1966 he was the buyers. The two-door coupe followed in February 1967 and a four-door station wagon in September 1967. 1000 The Subaru had a then unique water-cooled, four-cylinder boxer engine with overhead valves. Subaru engineers examined engines from Porsche, Volkswagen and Chevrolet Corvair and developed the combination with front-wheel drive. Until March 1969 Subaru had sold more than 4,000 units in the domestic market, with the Toyota Corolla KE10 ( introduced in 1966 ) and the Nissan Sunny B10 series that were competing. From 1969, the Subaru 1000 was replaced by the Subaru FF -1.
