Subaru Alcyone SVX

Subaru SVX (1991-1997)

The Subaru SVX (in Japan Alcyone SVX) was produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Subaru from mid- 1991 until the end of 1997 sport coupe with all-wheel or front wheel drive.

History

Subaru introduced the SVX in July 1991 in the USA, in September 1991 in Japan, and following on selected other markets. The SVX was the successor of his edgy designs now stylistically outdated coupe XT.

Preceded the production version was the one shown on the Motor Show in 1990 prototype, which only slightly differed from the standard model.

The SVX was at its largest market, the United States, only a moderate uptake and sold 1991/1992 5180 in 1993 3859 times. Subaru had expected 10,000 units per year. The work countered with the introduction of a front-wheel drive and more economical version called LS equipped for model year 1994. Nevertheless, sales in 1994 fell in the U.S. in 1609 pieces. In 1995 he went temporarily back on to 1812 copies, to 1996, when it again was only four-wheel drive versions to drop to 1432 pieces.

When he was dropped in late 1997 to 640 pieces, put a Subaru SVX the production.

Overall, Subaru SVX sold from 14,257 copies in the United States, about 25,000 worldwide. 2478 piece went to Europe, including 854 in Germany. Good 7000 SVX had right-hand drive.

Body

In contrast to the square of the SVX XT had a rounded body lines, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and an unusual glazing with two-piece side windows. The divider extends about 2 /3 of the window level and followed the contour of the roof above. These half- windows look otherwise rather on models with scissor or gullwing doors like the Lamborghini Countach or the De Lorean DMC- 12th Subaru patented in the course of development of the SVX a special heat process for forming glass.

Drive

While there had been the XT with turbocharged four- cylinder or six-cylinder suction, the SVX was available in only one engine, a water-cooled 3.3 - liter boxer engine with six cylinders (type EG33 ). The engine was a direct development of the 2.7 - liter (Type ER27 ) from the XT; but it had the new engine, two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder and provided with increased to 10:1 compression 230 hp at 5400/5900min and 309/410 Nm at 4400/4000min. The top speed was 220 km / h

The motor power opposite stood a curb weight of just 1600 kg. There was the SVX only with four- speed automatic transmission, which also had a sport mode. The trade press measure times of 7.5 seconds for the standard sprint from 0 to 100 km / h

Problem points

Transmission damage, warped brake discs and defective wheel bearings are known in the SVX as occasional shortcomings. The transmission losses were due to a bet on the transmission oil cooler. It gathered themselves to not regular gear oil dirt, which disabled the transmission oil flow over time, which could then lead to exitus of the transmission. Subaru brought on a later time by a filter has been integrated into the oil circuit of the transmission. The warped brake discs are mainly on poorly chosen linings back (and perhaps to poor ventilation of the discs ). The problems with the rear wheel bearings are justified either in defective seals or faulty installation at the factory.
