Motor / drive

The L- series had a water-cooled 4 -cylinder OHV boxer engine with 1769 cc capacity. Due to the difference of the same old engine designs (eg carburetor or electronic engine control with and without catalyst) and the vehicle itself, the engine power fluctuated 66-72 kW. There was also a version with a turbocharged engine (engine code EA82T ) and 100 kW, which was also used in the Subaru XT.

When transmission was a 5 -speed manual transmission and a 3 -speed automatic transmission, from 1988, a 4 -speed automatic transmission offered.

The series wheel was switched on at the switch-in four-wheel drive models with a manual hand lever or vacuum by pressing a button. As a center differential is missing, the connection of the Allrads was provided only in rough terrain or on slippery surfaces. As of 1988, there were initially in the turbo models the permanent all-wheel drive with reduction for Sedan and Super station or an electronic 4- speed automatic transmission with ACT4. In the manual version, and the permanent all-wheel drive, there was an additional reduction for off-road driving. In addition, a rear locking differential was optional.

In addition, the turbo models are equipped with a pneumatic air suspension (as in Subaru XT ), while the normal models McPherson struts possessed by the front and rear axle. Furthermore, these models had ventilated disc brakes at the front and rear axle, while the normal models had this only front and rear drum brakes.

All models with manual gearbox were fitted with a Hill Start Assist.

Equipment

As an equipment variant, it gave the Leone DL, GL and Turbo in both Coupé ( Turismo ), Limousine ( sedan) and Kombi ( station or Super Station).

The trim level DL had electrically adjustable side mirrors and a headlight washing system, with the exception of special edition models, however, no central locking or electric windows.

The trim GL had the DL equipment there are standard central locking, electric windows front and rear, velor seats with carpet, Tilt Wheel, a separate split rear seat with head restraints (combined ) and for sedan and coupe either an electric sunroof. For turbo equipment, only one other seat cover patterns and semi- bucket seats was added in front. Air conditioning was optional.

The normal station wagon without raised roof had the DL equipment, station wagons with raised roof (Super Station), Sedan and Turismo had the GL features.

Another feature possessed the L series a large status display in the dashboard, were displayed on the basic information such as open doors, switched on (remote) light or fed off wheel.

Reliability

The Leone was regarded as a very reliable and convenient car, so it was, for example, greatly valued by representatives of hunting and forestry and Subaru from 1988 for the German market was offering a special model called " Hubertus". This name was later given a special model of the first generation Legacy and was considered a forerunner of the Outback.

Only the body was notorious for its strong susceptibility to rust in the rear wheel arches and sills. In the last models in the early 1990s, this has been improved, but the problem could not be completely eliminated.

Successor

The Subaru Legacy was originally intended as a replacement for the L- series, however, Subaru changed the concept and so the Subaru Impreza has been positioned as the successor to the compact class and the legacy of the middle class.
