Subbaraman Vijayalakshmi

S. Vijayalakshmi ( Vijayalakshmi Subbaraman; born March 25, 1979 in New Delhi ) is an Indian chess champion.

Life

In Madras, now Chennai, growing up learned " Viji " the game of chess even as a four year old by her father Subbaraman. She is married to the Indian International Master Sriram Jha (born 1976 ), with which it is several months a year traveling to play in Asia, Europe and the USA on chess tournaments. Her sisters S. Meenakshi (* 1981, WGM ) and S. Bhanupriya ( the youngest ) also play chess. Meenakshi sometimes accompanied on their chess tours.

Achievements

Their first competition was the valley Chess Open 1986. In 1988, she won the Indian U10 Championship, this success could be repeated in the following year. The U12 title she also won twice.

In 1995, she reached the second place in the zone tournament in Madras. The Asian zone tournament in 1997 in Tehran, she won zone as well as the 1999 tournament in Mumbai. Commonwealth champion of women it was established in 1996 in Calcutta, now Kolkata. The Indian Women's Championship, she won six times: 1995 in Madras, 1996 in Calcutta, 1999 in Kozhikode, 2000 in Mumbai, New Delhi, 2001 and 2002 in Lucknow. At the 1998 Chess Olympiad in Elista, she participated for the Indian women's national team. At the Chess Olympiad 2000 in Istanbul she got for her performance on top board a silver medal, the same she succeeded in Bled 2002. 2007 she won the Leonardo di Bona Memorial in Cutro at Crotone.

It was International Women's Champion 1996. Since 2001 she is Grand Master of the women and thus the first Indian woman Grand Master ( 1 standard in 1996 with her winning the Commonwealth Chess Championship in Kolkata, 2 standard 1998 in Linares, 3 standard in 2000 at the Asian Championship in Udaipur and 4 standard at WIPRO -GM tournament in Hyderabad in July 2000). She also wears the title of International Master of men, which she received through her performance at the Chess Olympiad 2000. She is the first Indian woman who was awarded the IM title of men. 2006 Kalamaria she won a GM norm for men. Also for their victory in Cutro 2007 she received a men's GM norm.

In Germany it has played in two events: 2006 in Nuremberg at the LGA Open and in the 2006/07 season for the Brackwerder SC in the NRW -Class (4th league).

Your Elo rating is 2434 (as of May 2011), and is thus, in the Indian Elo ranking of women in third place behind K. Humpy and Harika Dronavalli. In April 2006, it had risen to number 11 of the Women's World Ranking. Their highest ever Elo rating was 2485 in October 2005.
