Subcommissural organ

The Organum subcommissurale or subcommissural organ (SCO ) is located in the roof of the III. Ventricle, where it covers the posterior commissure. The SCO is one of the circumventricular organs. It is an evolutionarily ancient structure of chordates that already found in amphioxus.

The ependymal cells of the SCO secrete a glycoprotein (SCO - spondin ) in the cerebrospinal fluid, which is also known as the Reissner - substance and assembles the Reissner - thread that no longer exists in adult humans. The function of the Reissner thread is unknown. Since SCO - spondin in cell culture stimulated the formation of neural cell processes, the Subkommissuralorgan and its secretion may play a role in the embryonic development of the CNS, such as the sprouting of axons. Disorders, particularly agenesis of the SCO are also associated with hydrocephalus.
